Renowned Canadian author Margaret Atwood joined a group of distinguished writers to present modern re-imaginings of Shakespeare's most famous works. Her contribution, "Hag-Seed", is often hilarious, at times dark and always delightful. Felix, artistic director of a theatre festival, is booted out by a ruthless rival. Years later, he accepts a job as drama teacher in a prison. He sees his chance of revenge by staging his version of "The Tempest" with the prison's inmates and goes on to create a veritable storm. You need not be too familiar with Shakespeare's work to be able to enjoy this superb novel about freedom, revenge and forgiveness and the great potential of literature. Participants are requested to read parts of the text at home as preparation for the discussion in class. Level C1.
