While there is a lot of discussion about why Taylor Swift is so popular, commentators rarely consider her lyrics when explaining her success. Yet those texts are at the center of the response of her fans to her music: they quote Swift’s lines, share them with each other, parody them, and turn them into aphorisms in their daily lives. This course will look at Swift’s lyrics with the goal of describing the patterns in them and interpreting them for ourselves. Level ab B2.
